Whippan’s Galaxy Railway museum will open its doors in mid-October.
The train museum is one of several in Hawaii that are part of the Galaxy Railway exhibit and collection.
The museum is in Whittier and includes the train’s locomotive and the track where it was built.
The first trains built in the 1850s were operated by the Whittan, Oahu & Pacific Railway.
Whittany was established as the Pacific Railway’s station for passenger service on May 1, 1853.
In 1875, the Oahu Railway purchased the train and began operating it from its terminal at Whittaniwaka.
The Whittans operated the train from its Whittanic facility for more than a century.
In the early 1900s, the train was converted to a passenger train and converted to an aircraft carrier.
A new Whittanian locomotive was completed in the mid-1960s, but the original train was still running.
The new museum will feature exhibits on the Whippans, Pacific and Oahu railways, including the Whipper’s first passenger train, the Whipton, built in 1884.
“It’s going to be really exciting for us to be able to be a part of it,” museum director David Gough said.
“I’m sure it’s going be something very special for a lot of people.”
The museum will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday to Saturday.
Gough says the train museum will bring people together to experience the history of the train, which is the largest passenger train in the world.
The exhibition will be on display at the museum from May 12 through Oct. 31.
He said the museum is open to the public during regular hours and can be reached by phone at 888-983-6600 or by visiting their website at www.whittany.com.
The exhibit will also include the trains history, including photos and audio of the whittan locomotive.
“We’ve always been a railroad museum, but we’ve never had a history of this scale and this level of detail,” Gough explained.
The Galaxy railway museum is located at Whippanna’s Station in Whuttan and is open from 10 a.g. to 4 p.p.m, Monday to Friday, except Thanksgiving.
The Oahu railway museum in Honolulu also features an aviation museum that opened in February.
The Pacific Railway Museum opened in 2016.
The galaxy railway museum will continue to be open to public for educational purposes and can now be reached at 925-731-3600.
